Buy once, own it forever

Your license never expires. The first year of updates is included, and you can keep using that version for as long as you like — on your schedule, not ours.

Stay current for 35% a year

Keep getting new features and the newest version for 35% of your license price per year. We simply invoice you each year around your renewal date — nothing to remember. Prefer to prepay a few years? Great for grant budgets.

Cancel anytime

Stop whenever you like and keep the version you have — no penalty, no lock-in. Come back later and you never re-pay for the license; just restart updates to jump to the current version.

How machines are counted. Each computer that runs the software needs a license — whether it’s used to design studies or to collect data. Individual licenses cover a set number of named machines; site licenses cover everyone in a group, department, or campus. Not sure which fits? Ask us and we’ll recommend the most economical option.
Our pricing philosophy. Our highest priority is keeping these tools affordable for every academic and non-profit researcher — we want anyone who’d benefit from the software to be able to use it. If you qualify for non-profit pricing and it’s still cost-prohibitive, tell us and we’ll work something out. And if your lab is well funded, feel free to contribute beyond the minimum — every extra dollar goes straight into building better research software.

Free student licenses. If you’re a student with a school email we recognize (a .edu or another academic domain), MediaLab and DirectRT are free for your own coursework and research — the current version, on one machine. Verify your school email and your license is issued on the spot — no waiting on us. It’s yours free while you’re a student: once a year we’ll ask you to click to confirm you’re still enrolled, and you’re good for another year. For individual, personal use; shared lab, department, or research-group machines use one of the licenses above. (High-school and trade-school students: we want to include you too — get in touch and we’ll sort it out.)

Already own an older version? You never pay for the license again. Just restart updates at 35%/yr to jump straight to the current version and stay current from there. This applies within the same license tier — if you’re moving up to a larger license (say, from a single workstation to a site license), just ask and we’ll send a fair quote.
Getting started

How to order

You can get started today. Email service@empirisoft.com and tell us what you need. We’ll confirm the details so you’re ordering exactly the right thing at a price that’s crystal clear, then — on your go-ahead — send an invoice by email with a link to pay securely online. Using a purchase order? Just say so and we’ll take care of it.

When you order, we send download and activation instructions so you can start the same day. Each following year we’ll send a renewal invoice to keep you current — pay it to continue updates, or let it lapse and keep the version you have. Your call, every year.
