Requiring correct fill-in-the-blank responses in MediaLab (case 20438)

    Hi,

I would like to know if there is a way to require participants to key in correct responses in fill-in-the-blank fields within MediaLab (similar to what can be done in DirectRT using incorrect.txt), and to present auditory feedback if the responses do not fit our specified responses.

    Thanks!

    Best,
    Darren

I've attached some example files that should achieve the desired effect. The attached .que file contains a fill in the blank item that asks for a particular word to enter in the response box. By using the skipto field of the responses.xls file (see the following section of the MediaLab manual for more information on this feature http://www.empirisoft.com/medialab/h...plex_skips.htm), we can use the Excel files IF function feature to tell MediaLab to skip to one of two items in the .que file. In the attached responses.xls file, that is the for the item named "fib," the same name as the fill in the blank item in the .que MediaLab file. This will get the responses.xls file to record whatever is typed for the fib item in the .que file in the vale field-cell B2 of the attached file.

If the word entered in for the fill in the blank item matches that listed in the responses.xls file-cell C2 in the attached file-MediaLab will go the item named "right" in the .que file. This will present the message that the word is correct. Also note that the "Skip to:" field for this item has the word end. This is to get MediaLab to skip over the item named "wrong" in the .que file so that its message is not presented if the correct word is entered for the fill in the blank item.

If the word entered for the fill in the blank item is anything different from the correct word in the skipto field for the fib item, then MediaLab will go the item named "wrong" in the .que file. Because the "end" item" comes right after the item named "wrong," there is no need to use the "Skip to:" field of the item named "wrong."

If you want to present sound files instead of text depending on the response to the fill in the blank item, you could either use the Backsound field of the Instruction items (see http://www.empirisoft.com/medialab/h...ebacksound.htm) or use a Sound File item instead of an Instruction item (see http://www.empirisoft.com/medialab/h...type.htm#sound).

    Hi Jason,

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions and sample files! I'll look into them and get back to you if I encounter any issues implementing them.

    Best,
    Darren
