    continue after 4sec (case 12221)

    Hi
I am trying to make the trial continue if subject does not respond after 4 seconds.
Subjects need to press a key between 1 to 5
    I wrote this command:
rt:1,2,3,4,5,clear4000 but it only clears screen. Any idea how I can make the trial continue even if response wasn't made after 4 seconds?
    Thanks,
    Shimrit

    Hi Shimrit.

Like you saw, using the clear command in the stim column of a trial only clears the screen of stimuli while still waiting for a response. To make the trial continue even if participants did not make a response, let me quote from the Style Editor > MinMax-Setting RT Limits section of the DirectRT manual:

"By default, DirectRT will continue to the next event when an RT occurs. You can optionally have DirectRT wait until a fixed amount of time has passed instead. E.g., Let's say you want to present a stimulus and take and RT, but you want that stimulus on screen for 2000ms?no matter how fast the RT. To do this specify a max value of 2000ms (In your case, Shimrit, you would type 0-4000 in the MinMax field of the appropriate row in your Styles file). Then, when you request the RT in your input file, simply add the keyword "full" at the end like this:

    rt:53,44,full

This method can be combined with the automatic continuation method above. If you want a fixed response window but you want the stimulus to disappear after the response, then add the term "clear-1" as in the following:

    rt:53,44,full,clear-1"

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

    Style for trial

The problem as I see it is that my trial is combined of two responses from subjects. For the first, I want a time limitation but for the second I dont want a minmax limitation. Again, the two are in the same row.

    Thanks for your response,
    Shimrit

You can use more than one style code in the same trial. In the stim column, put the style code number surrounded by <> after whatever stim codes you use in a particular cell of your input file; see the Input files > Style section of the DirectRT manual for an example. This way, you can use a defined response window with automatic continuation for one stimulus and then switch to a different style code that does not have those features for any subsequent stimuli.

    style

and when I do not specify a style code in a stimuli box, will it use the style mentioned in the style column? or now that I use a specific code for a stimuli box I should do so in all other stimuli in the trial?
    Thanks again!

Any use of a style code between <> in a stim column cell should only affect that particular stimuli. Any stim column cells without a style code between <> should use whatever style code is defined in the style column cell of that row of the input file.
