    variables in SPSS

    Hello,

When I look at my data in SPSS, I notice that a generic variable name gets generated twice for certain variables, and the actual variable name that appears in my que file is listed in the data label field with a _01 and _02 appended to it.

    For example:

In the que file, the variable name is hp_m01, however in the SPSS file I get v0001 and v0002 in the variable name fields and hp_m01_01 and hp_m01_02 in the label field (btw: hp_m01 never gets listed as a variable). I know something like this can happen when the variable name is greater than 8 characters, but this isn't the case here. Also, I checked to make sure I do not have duplicate variable names, so this can't be an explanation either. One thing to mention is that these variables do skip to another variable if the answer is no (using a variable name and not a +1 format), but I have other variables that do this, and are not producing this problem in the SPSS file. Is there something amiss with my naming conventions?

I would greatly appreciate any help with this!

    Thank you.
    Shelly

variables in SPSS - problem solved!

    Hi All,

I discovered the problem - it seems that since I had the number of scale points (p flag in the parameters field set to two), ML was allowing for the possibility of two responses. When I set the range to one (r1-1), this fixed the problem!

    Cheers,
    Shelly
