    repeat practice trials after no response (case 34099)

    Hi all,

    I am setting up a task where respondents are asked to respond 'a' or 'b' within a time limit.

    in the 'time' column, I have 'rt:23,18<-999', where key 18 is the incorrect answer and the program will jump to a trial with error message (trial 999); if key 23 is entered the next stimuli of the same trail (a positive feedback) will be presented. In both cases, after the messages, it moves on to the next trail.

    I need to edit the above so that if the respondent have not chosen either option within 500 ms, they will be sent back to practice trials that are placed at the beginning of the task. Therefore, 3 options in total.

    ideally, after repeating the practice trials, they will return and repeat the block they left. But in case this cannot be done, repeating all blocks is still acceptable.

    Please kindly advise if this is possible. If not, what are the usual solutions in performing a similar function? Thanks a million!

    Hello,

    Use of the skip or jump functions in DirectRT can only move to trials that have yet to be presented in the .csv input file; that is, DirectRT cannot jump or skip to trials or stimuli that have already been presented.

    To create the effect you would like, I would suggest that right after the stimulus that has the "right" and "wrong" responses, you would put the practice trial followed by any blocks you wanted the participants to respond to.

    to follow up on this question, is it possible to:

    trial 1: response a-->continue trial/ b-->skip to trial 999 (red 'X') and continue to trial 2/ timeout--> jump to block X (re-practice)
    where block X consist of a series of trials identical to trial 1, with conditions: a-->continue trial/ b-->skip to trial 999 (red 'X') and continue to next trial.

    After block X is completed, returning to trial 1 and contine to the block.

    Thanks.

    All of that sounds possible except the last part of returning to trial 1 after completion of block X. DirectRT cannot jump or skip to already presented trials in the .csv input file; DirectRT can only jump or skip to subsequent rows of the .csv input file that have yet to be presented.
