randomising location within pair (case 29182)

    Hi

I am presenting two items on the screen at the same time. One on the left and one on the right of the screen. Each pair will be shown 6 times, once in each of 6 blocks. For each block I want the presentation of the pair, which one appears on the right or left, to be randomised but so overall across the 6 blocks each item is presented three times on the left and three times on the right. I have scoured the manual and have no clue. Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks

Please post a copy of your .csv input file here or send it to support@empirisoft.com (reference case 29182) and I will be happy to take a look at it.

    Hi Jason

I haven't finished the file yet so can't send it over at the moment. Would you be able to advise me how can randomise the presentation of 10 pairs per trial without the same pair being shown two times in succession?

    Thanks

    Hi Jason

My file is not yet complete as I am stuck on quite a few issues - I have attached it but not sure if it makes sense!

Participants will be learning an ordered 5-item sequence via presentation of all 10 pairs that represent order relations among the items in the sequence.

I have a learning phase and a recognition phase. in the learning phase I am presenting pairs of items but within a pair each item is presented in succession at the centre of the screen, with pairs separated by a fixation cross. All pairs are going to be presented twice - 2 blocks.

In the recognition phase I am presenting the same pairs as the learning phase but now I am presenting the two items from each pair on the screen at the same time, one on the left and one on the right. I am presenting all 10 pairs 4 times - 4 blocks. For each pair presentation in the test phase I would like to randomise whether the each item in the pair is on the left or right so across the 4 blocks each item in a pair is presented twice on the left and twice on the right.

I am also stuck on another randomising issue. I want to randomise the presentation order of pairs in the learning phase and recognition phase, with the restriction that across blocks the pair should not be presented consecutively/twice in a row.

Finally- and this one I do not think direct rt can do! Ideally I would like each participant to have a new sequence of items drawn from a bigger pool, and therefore each persons 10 pairs would be different. But the items in the pairs are presented in succession and I cannot randomise the item within the pair because the order relations must be consistent across the 10 pairs - i.e. so the 10 pairs represent a consistent order across 5 items.

    Thanks
