The recording of the response as a sound file begins at the onset of the stimulus, just like a regular RT. So, yes, you could extract the RT from the amplitude of the audio in the wave file (using a freeware audio editor such as Audacity). In fact that's more or less how DirectRT does it--it applies the sensitivity you've set in the audio setup as a criterion to determine how much of a change in amplitude should be detected before the RT is triggered.
