No joystick responding for online-rating item type on MediaLab (case 22325)

Hi there,

I'm recording continuous data using the online rating item type while participants look at a timed html background page. The online rating item works perfectly when using the right and left arrow keys or a mouse. However, it registers no response from the joystick. It is a Logitech extreme 3D pro joystick that is calibrated and works fine in other programs/applications. Additionally, the joystick worked well in both of the samples(joystick continuous/ joystick and mouse input) that accompany DirectRT so I am assuming this is a problem in MediaLab.

My experiment is essentially finalized and I'm right about to run participants under the assumption that the joystick I just purchased would work with the online rating. I have no clue as to why it isn't working given that the item type is compatible with joysticks. Given the tight deadline, I would really appreciate any help to resolve this issue.

Try running the MediaLab files while only the joystick and keyboard are plugged in to the computer.

I've tried running the medialab files with only the joystick/keyboard but the online-rating task is still unresponsive to the joystick. I've sent the que file to the support email seeing as how I was unsure of how to post it on here.

What happens if you use the Calibrate Joystick program in the Utilities folder in the MediaLab folder? You said in the original post that the joystick was calibrated, but it was not clear if this meant you used the program that came with MediaLab.

Sorry about the confusion. I just checked out the MediaLab calibrate program in the utilities folder and I get a popup that it could not detect the joystick. The same message popups in the Direct RT utilities callibrate program despite the joystick working for the two joystick samples that comes with Direct RT ( that is the data shows it is responsive for 244 and 248 movements using the joystick). On top of that, the basic windows' properties/calibration shows that the joystick is working fine.

I was wondering if there is any update on or resolution for dealing with this joystick issue. Any help would greatly be appreciated as I still would like to use the joystick in MediaLab.

Please send me a copy of your computer's dxdiag report. This is straightforward to make. Click on the Start button, type dxidag into the Search box, run the dxdiag.exe application, and save a copy of the dxdiag.txt report to send to me. Sorry for the delay in responding, but I wanted to see if you were still having problems with using a joystick peripheral with MediaLab.

Have you tried making sure the joystick is plugged in before opening MediaLab to run your files?

Please also tell me the full version number (i.e., 20xx.x.xxx) of your copy of MediaLab. You can find it by opening MediaLab and selecting Help>About MediaLab from the main menu bar.

Finally, please either upload a copy of your MediaLab .que file that uses the joystick here or send it to me at [email]support@empirisoft.com[/email] (please reference case 22325)

No worries. The problems with the joystick still persist. The version I'm using is v2014.1.125. For privacy reasons, I would prefer to send the .que files to support email if that's okay. I'll do that shortly.

If anyone is interested in using a joystick for the online rating scale and Medialab does not detect the joystick, I managed to get it to work using joystick software that emulates a mouse/keyboard. Specifically, I used Joytokey. It served the same function for me. I thought I would just throw it up here if anyone runs into the issue.
