Potential program conflicts?

We are purchasing DirectRT for use on WinXP. DirectRT will be run at the same time as another program to be used for physiological data collection via an external device that contains its own clock for data sampling, and which then spools the data to the computer via USB for storage. The folks from that software company say that there should not be a problem with operation of their software/hardware as long as your program does not "take control of the CPU clock" (their phrase).
Please verify whether DirectRT "takes control" of the clock (perhaps as its method for bypassing Window's control of the clock otherwise?) or not. This question may be answerable via consideration of known conflicts, as I would assume other psychologists have used separate programs running on the same computer for things such as physiological data acquisition.

Should be no problem. DirectRT used to take control of the clock but no more. It caused more trouble than it was worth for the very small gains in performance. XP pro tends to handle multi-tasking quite well so we now let DirectRT share the CPU clock with other apps. I would suggest disconnecting from the network when you can though when running high performance apps--network activity can really hog the CPU's attention at times.
