Can I use a participant's response to a fill-in-the-blank item in subsequent items?

Hello,
I would like to create a questionnaire in which participants' responses to a fill-in-the-blank item are automatically inserted into subsequent questions. For example, the 1st item might ask something like: "What is your favourite food?", and a participant might enter "PIZZA". I would then like to ask a series of questions about PIZZA in subsequent items (e.g., How delicious do you think PIZZA is?, How expensive do you think PIZZA is?, etc.). Following this, participants would be asked to enter in a second fill-in-the-blank response and the process would repeat. Is this possible in Medialab and how exactly would I do it? I have read the response to another similar forum item on this topic, but it is still not clear to me how this is done. A step by step list of instruction is much appreciated.

Here's how it's done for anyone who has the same question:

You can insert the value of a subject's prior response to any fill-in-the blank or scale response item by typing the appropriate variable name surrounded by < > within any question wording text. For example, if you had previously asked subjects about their race using a fill-in-the-blank question or a scale response and you had called this variable race, then you could insert the subjects response in a subsequent question wording like this: What percentage of your friends are <race>? For scale responses, the text label of the selected response is used.

That's exactly right. If you would like some further help with the feature, you should take a look at sample 2 and sample 6 within the MediaLab samples folder as well.

MediaLab can extend out to even offer advanced excel based logic. Variables displayed have the possibility to be shifted and selected exactly as you would want them to be.

MediaLab can go as far as to even alter and edit variables located within custom HTML web specific stimuli (custom items):

I found that this doesn't work when my variable name begins with a capital letter.

Maybe it has changed in the newer versions; I am working with MediaLab 2004.
