Due to the fact that both MediaLab and DirectRT run separately from one another, it is indeed possible to use DirectRT 2008 while working with MediaLab 2006.
You may be able to experience more fluid functionality with both programs being from the same year release; however for the most part, it is not a necessity.

A downgrade should definitely be possible if you would like to take that route as well; however an upgrade would be recommended.
