SPSS problem
Our research group collected data using MediaLab, and all seemed to go well, but when we try to import data into SPSS using the by_questionnaire file, we get an error stating that there are words other than "/" and variable names in the syntax. I've looked all through the sps file and I can't see what it's talking about, unless perhaps underscores are not acceptable in filenames? Or is there something else that might be causing the problem?

Does the native .SAV file (from the byVariableName folder) open OK in SPSS?

Yes, the .SAV from byvariable opens in SPSS.
Just to clarify, though, the group was wanting to import the data by questionnaire, and that's where the error was generated. You may be working around to that, I just wanted to keep it out there.
Thanks.

Not sure if you are still looking for a solution on this, but does the .csv version of the byQuestionnaire data open ok? If so, it might be easiest to use that. If there are too many variables (i.e., > 255) then you can import the csv file directly into SPSS by renaming it ".txt".
If you really want to import the original .txt file and are still getting syntax problems, feel free to send or attach copies of the .sps file and the .txt file and I'll take a look at them.
