Activating Your Departmental or Campus-Wide Site License (case 492)

Normally, MediaLab and DirectRT are activated by emailing us a code which appears on the screen when the software is run for the first time. We send you back a permanent license number which will activate the software permanently. However, large departments and users with multiple computer labs have asked for a simpler method of authentication. To that end, we've enabled licensing by IP address.

    For more detail, see: www.empirisoft.com/medialab/help/setup.htm

For this to work, your computers need to have static IP addresses or at least IP addresses within a defined range such as:

    123.123.123.*

We can accommodate multiple patterns such as

    123.123.123.*
    123.123.124.*
    123.123.125.*

We do not usually give unlimited access to an IP pattern such as 123.123.*.* unless it is a campus-wide site license as that could potentially authorize 65,000 computers across multiple departments.

Finally, the IP address range needs to be public. Internal addresses assigned by a router, for example, such as 192.168.1.* and 10.1.1.* can not be used as that would allow users at other locations to have free access.

When you place your order and request IP authentication, we update a file call license2006ip.dll for you - usually within a few hours or maybe a business day. The most recent copy is kept attached below in a .zip file.

All you do is install MediaLab and/or DirectRT as usual and then replace the existing license file with this one. It will be located in the main folder of both programs (e.g., C:\MediaLab\license2008.dll). If your directory contains a folder titled 'Components' paste the license files within this location, rather than the top directory (e.g,., C:\MediaLab\Components\license2010.dll).

Our 2008 and 2010 builds of the license files contain two separate .DLL's - both must be installed to the main folder.

To indicate that your machine is using the IP licensing, simply enter '99999' (five nines) as your activation code. As long as the computer's IP address falls within the range you specified, the software will run without further intervention.

As new IP ranges are received from customers, we'll update this list to reflect the changes.

[update from moderator, june 9, 2008] recently we have had a report of an error message given when trying to use the IP licensing dll. The text of the error was

Automation error - ClassFactory cannot supply requested class

This problem was solved by typing the following from the Run command on the Windows Start menu:

    regsvr32 c:\directrt\license2008ip.dll
