Style error on long file (case 11457)

I am having an issue with running one of my input files. It is about 9,000 trials long with two stimuli displayed at each trial. Whenever I try to run the file it gives me the error "Row 8947 requests style code 8946, which does not exist in the style file (.drt) for this session." The numbers sometimes change and row 8947 requests style 9 for me. Also, whenever I cut the experiment in half and run each separately they both work fine. I suspect that Directrt has some sort of limit on trial number but I have been unable to find anything so far. Are my suspicions correct?

Wow, 9000 trials! That is the largest input file I've heard of (so far). So, congratulations on really getting your use out of DirectRT. Let me see what I can do to get it work as you would like.

Can you send me a copy of your input file? I'd be happy to take a look at it.

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for the quick reply. The file is so long because we include several repetitions of the code to force particular correct responses as a function of prior ones. We may have been able to do this much more easily with error feedback, but that function has never worked properly on the virtual machines we use. I've attached the input and style file.

Could you also send me a copy of the TrackPerformance.txt file in the DirectRT folder?

A couple of somewhat random questions:

Can you see if your input file runs if you replace the Codes of 0 and 8490 in your Style file with some other numbers like 10 and 11?

Are your image files all .bmps?

Are your screen resolution and the screen size setting in your Styles file (click the Options button to find it) the same? If not, try manually setting them to match.

Have you tried to run one or two files from the Samples folder that came with DirectRT to see if you get any error messages, especially one at the end of the file suggesting that you check the TrackPerformance file?

Thanks. Tried all this. All are bmps, resolutions match. Changed the style file. Samples, as well as other inputs we made for the study run fine. Still getting the error about style codes that don't exist.

Do you have this input file and Styles file in their own program folder? Or do you have them in the same folder as another Styles file?

    Nope, just one style file.

And that Styles file is in the same folder as your input file and study stimuli?

Just out of curiosity, would you be able to break up your large single input file into a group of smaller ones to run? It seems like you have some natural break points in the trials with ~instruction that occur between blocks of picture presentation. If you have MediaLab, you could use it to handle the presentation of all of the stimuli. I had this thought after rereading the statement from your first email about how splitting the file in half did not seem to invoke the "style not found" error.

One more question. Why did you choose to use rt:-1 at the end of every trial? Have you tried replacing those with some number of ms appropriate for presentation of the second stimulus in each trial? I'm just wondering if there is some possible reaction between rt:-1 in a trial and styles that use 0 in the Min-Max value.

    Style error message

Hi there, I'm also having a problem with an error style message which reads "Row 108 requests style code 107, which does not exist.." which i try to input the spreadsheet

I've got no clue how to resolve this issue..all codes are the same in each box. I have 196 trials and have tried splitting them into two files but still get this error message

    Thanks

    Hi svw,

Would you mind uploading a copy of your input file to this thread so that I can take a look at it?

    Thanks!
