On-line rating slider formattingn (case 6811)

I saw that there is a way to get an html-based slider that works better than the standard medialab one. Currently, the medialab slider is difficult to move and overlaps the content I am displaying. My question is how I get the html slider to replace the on-line rating slider? I want to display a website (via webtracker) and the website will show videos. I want people to be able to rate the videos while never leaving the website or web tracker screen. If there is a better way to do this that would help too. My plan was to just have the continuous rating slider appear under the website, but I was hoping to change the slider to the html one. Let me know if this can be done.

    Thanks!

    Hi affectlab,
It can be done by creating a webpage that has both your video and a slider on it and calling it a Custom Item.

I'm attaching two sliders that we use here in our lab along with the folder called "slider" which contains the java script information to make everything work. Make sure the .htm file and the slider file live in the same place

You'll notice that we wanted ours to look like MediaLab, so we've followed the formatting in the helpguide (see the Custom Items section).

To edit what I've attached, you can open the .htm files with Microsoft Notepad or with an editing software (like Microsoft Frontpage, or there are lots of free ones out there). At the bottom of the file you'll see what you'll likely want to change - the anchors for the slider and the increments for the slider.

But bear in mind, the html slider will allow your participant to rate the video just one time, whereas the online-rating item type will allow you to collect multiple ratings/data points during the video. So before you adopt the html slider route, make sure that you will be content with just one rating of the video. If you need multiple ratings, you should be able to fiddle with the parameters of your video and the online rating item in MediaLab to make things fit better on your screen.

    Also, check out http://support.empirisoft.com/showthread.php?p=436

    Good luck!

Thanks so much - I do need multiple ratings - participants will be navigating a website with multiple videos and I want them to be able to rate each video after they watch it without leaving the website. So I guess there is no way to make the html slider appear as an on-line rating item? Or does anyone know how I can change the parameters of the existing medialab slider? I have not seen information on how to do that. Again, thanks so much for the assistance - it's very helpful.

    Hi affectlab,

I don't know of a way to make the html slider act like the online rating item, since the online rating item works using

Do you have the ability to edit the webpages you are showing? I'm not sure if you can move the online rating slider from it's bottom of the screen position, but perhaps you can edit the pages themselves so you don't have overlap. Or show the pages at less than full screen if that doesn't compromise your video (though you'd have to do that with an html page, not webtracker).

You can change the parameters of the online rating slider by setting the number of points. I'd recommend reading through this thread http://support.empirisoft.com/showthread.php?t=4980, there's a helpful screenshot.

Thanks again - I can try to revise the website to minimize the overlap if there's no way to resize the slider. I am able to use the parameters to change the number and text labels - are there any other customizations that can be done to the on-line slider? I have a 0-100 scale and when I use those the labels, whenever I drag the bar, numbers show up above it on a yellow "tool tip" style label, but that scale is on a 1000 point scale which can be confusing to participants. Is there any way to make it so that the little label that pops up is consistent with the parameter anchor labels I specified?

Do you see this yellow label when you use the right and left arrows and not the mouse? I believe this item is meant to be used with a joystick or the arrow keys, and not the mouse. Try just using the arrow keys.

I don't believe there is a way to customize the online rating slider further, but perhaps another poster will have an idea.

Okay, ideally we would have them use the mouse. Essentially all I need to happen is to be able to use the webtracker (this is a necessity so I can track their website activity and know what content participants are rating) but also have people rate various parts of the website. If I embedded html forms into the website in the appropriate places (i.e., after they view each thing they need to rate), would medialab be able to intercept their responses (using the webtracker question type)?

Slider scale for Inclusion of other in self scale

I am interested in making the "Inclusion of other in the self scale" a slider scale in which the circles with gradually change in overlapping degree. Is there a way in which this can be done?

    Link to scale: http://www.haverford.edu/psych/ble/c...iginalios.html

Please circle the picture that best describes your current relationship with your romantic partner.
Here is what the scale looks like - it's a 7 point scale originally but we are interested in making it continuous scale

Thank you in advance for any insight!
