Thread: Randomize responses within an item?

  1. #1

    Randomize responses within an item?

Is it possible to randomize the list of responses available in a "multiple response" item?

In this case, participants are asked to select "up to four attributes" out of the 10 presented. I would like to randomize the 10 presented attributes to prevent position effects.

    Thanks for your help!

No, not without creating a custom item in HTML (a little bit of scripting could randomize the order). An alternative would be to come up with multiple (e.g, counterbalanced) versions of the same item and randomize which one they get (e.g., selecting 1 of say 10 versions). You can do this by combining WGR randomization with a simple skip. See the advanced hint described here from the user's guide:

Ok, thanks for the quick response. I will likely try the alternative you mentioned and create multiple, counterbalanced versions of the same item using different arrangements of the attributes.
