Run time error '9': Subscript out of range (case 495)

    Hello,

I'm running MediaLab 2008. I've recently placed a pair of .AVI videos into a study by linking to them directly in experiment editor (No embeds, no URL links). They play fine, but if any button is pressed on the keyboard during playback it causes a runtime error (error '9': subscript out of range) to pop up, followed by a complete crash of Media Lab. This only occurs during playback of the videos, before and after in the questionnaires I have had no problems. I've duplicated this problem using a .MPG file type as well. If left alone, the whole video will play and everything will progress normally. However, if the participants press anything it will crash instantly and we will have to restart.

Any ideas about what is going on?

    Fixed...?

In case anyone else encounters the same problem I had, it appears to have just been an issue with my OS. after turning off the computer and letting it sit for a while the error simply vanished. I haven't encountered it over multiple tests, no matter what I do on the keyboard. Strange.

Thanks for the update Dan--that is very strange--never heard of it before. So were you simply listing the video file names within an "HTML" item within a que file? i.e., substituting the local video file name for an HTML file name or URL? If so, what problem was that helping you solve that using a "Movie" item type couldn't do? Just curious! Curious to know if the same solution would work by listing the name of the video as the file name for an EXE item type or even a Word Document item type. Hmm.

The video file was listed in the .exp directly, it was not embedded in any form of HTML or other format. The format was .AVI and the OS was Windows XP. Is it possible to import the video into .que as a 'video' type and then put that into the .exp? I'm sorry I can't be of much help in informing you more about what happened, it literally fixed itself without explanation. Perhaps it was just a bad day for my computer!

Yes, you can definitely do the latter (see the movie item type under the questionnaire section in the users guide). Also, when check the WMP, you might look at options in both wmplayer.exe as well as wmplayer2.exe--depending on which is being used on the system by MediaLab.

Great, I'll see if I can work these changes into the next study. Just out of curiosity, is there any plans to make MediaLab capable of pairing with a tablet? While we were running the last study, we were talking about how it would be really nice if you were able to monitor everyone's progress from some sort of mobile device. That way you wouldn't have to be leaning over your participants or guessing at their progress. Anyways thanks for your help!

    Cheers,

    Dan

    Dan,

You should be able to use the most recent versions of MediaLab with tablets that run Windows 7 or Windows 8.
