blank screen after a free response trial in directrt

    Hi,

After running a trial in directrt that requires an open-ended response (e.g., "DirectRT\Samples\5 - Other Features\01 open ended responses\anagram"), DirectRt freezes. For example, I've tried running different files that require open-ended responses (including the samples) and get the same result (freezing after trial 1 upon entering my response). I'm running directrt version 2010.2.103.1115 on a windows 7 machine, by the way. Thanks in advance for the help.

Please find my dxdiag file attached.

    DirectRT Error message

I've been having trouble with DirectRT v2010.2.103.1115 [editor note: see above]. One problem that I am aware of is that the program freezes when I run your samples that require open-ended responses. Today, however, DirectRT wouldn't run any files and generated the following error message (see attached, 10-12-07...). I'm also attaching information on my machine (dxdiag), which runs Windows 7. Thanks.

This is strange. I'm running the same version of DirectRT here on my own Windows 7 machine and everything (including the open ended samples) seem to be running fine. I'll see if I can figure out what might be going wrong. In the mean time, is there another computer you can try to replicate this problem on? I can give you an authoirzation code to check it out.

I know this is very strange. Unfortunately, my lab computers are being set up so I don't have a computer running windows 7 I can experiment with. I do have a lap top running Windows Vista, but I'm thinking it would be best to try to replicate the problem with a Windows 7 machine.

So here's the backstory just in case it will help you solve the problem. At one point, DirectRt did function. I was able to run files, but the files would not run correctly. For example, intertrial intervals were all over the place, stimuli (e.g., words) would not be fully displayed, it would freeze often especially after open-ended responses. Then, the program just stopped working and generated the error log I attached to the last email.

    Hope this information helps!

I noticed in the error content there is mention of not being able to find the specified drive. Is there anything unusual about the location of the DirectRT folder installation or the location of the sample files? Unusual could be anything other than C:\DirectRT, and definitely anything running over a network or a location that requires admin access/permissions.

Also, if locations all seem reasonable, I would be tempted to try an uninstall/reinstall given the unusual nature of the problem (i.e., transitioning from open ended responses, to ALL input files in general). But again, I'd look at file/folder locations first for anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks for these ideas, but I installed the software personally on the c: drive. I will uninstall/reinstall tonight.

I uninstalled/reinstalled and have the same issue: I can't get any files to run in DirectRT.

I installed the same DirectRt software on another machine running Windows 7, and DirectRt worked great.

I'm convinced something is off with my machine, but I don't know what the problem could be. Any thoughts given your reading of the error log or my dxdiag file? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the dxdiag.txt file for the Windows 7 machine on which it's working. Look for a value called "D3D9 Overlay" and see if it's "Supported". I noticed in the dxdiag.txt file you posted, it's not supported. This could possibly be related to the problem as the open ended dialog boxes that pop up are in some sense "overlays". I would also check to make sure you have the correct drivers for your video display.
