Thread: total response time issue

    total response time issue

I am doing a task in which a participant either presses the spacebar in response to a stimulus or does not press anything. What I want is for the stimulus to appear on the screen for 500msec, then clear, and for there to be a total trial time of 2500msec. I have it set for the full trial to take 2500 msec by adding "full" on the trial timing. And I have the min-max setting to 500-2500!
Everything is working perfectly, except that whenever the spacebar it pressed, the 2500 msec is starting from that point, so the next trial doesn't start until 2500 msec later. I just want the entire trial to only take 2500 msec. In other words, if the participant's response comes 1000 msec into the trial, I want the remainder of the trial to be 1500 msec. Right now, DirectRT is starting the 2500 from the point at which the response is made (1000) making the total trial 3500 msec. Here is what I have in the time column for a stimulus for which the spacebar should be pressed:

    rt:57,-1,clear500,full

    and as I said, min-max is 500-2500!

    Thanks for any ideas.

It sounds like you are on the right track. Can you attach your input and style files?
