Something similar to a visual analog scale (case 27555)

    Hi,

I want to make something like a visual analog scale. Participants should rate stimuli by clicking on a glass which then is filled up to the point where they clicked (no "filling animation", just the glass filled to that point) and then click a button if want to continue. From what I found, it is not possible to make a vas in DirectRT (but in MediaLab which I do not have access to). I tried using different images that appear when participants click on predefinded areas (and setting the button as the correct answer to continue to the next trial), but I don't know how to make this in one trial. I used jumping to jump to specific trials, but then I have a little flash between the different glasses because the screen is prepared. My question would be, is it possible to do this in one trial, i.e. get rid of the flashing?

A second problem I have is that it should be possible to get back to a less filled glass, e.g. starting with an empty glass, clicking on top to have full glass, clicking in the middle to have it half filled. I could do this by jumping between trials, but how do I know how much the glass was filled when they hit the button? I would need to have these "jump trials" for every trial which would make a huge amount of trials.

    Hi,

I'd love to see what files you already created and try to run them on my copy of DirectRT. Please either upload them here or send them to me directly at support@empirisoft.com (please reference case 27555).

The "flash" is a normal part of DirectRT functioning as DirectRT ends one trial row of the input file and prepares to present the subsequent trial row. You can try setting the background color of the first row of your styles.drt to the same background as your trials to see what this does about the "flash."

Take a look at the attached file and let me know if that is what you had in mind when you wanted to "get rid of the flash"

The jump and skip features can only move to rows of the input file that come after the request for jumping or skipping; it cannot move backwards into the input file to trials that have already been presented.

Thanks for the answer. That's a possible solution to get rid of the flash (only being able to make the glass fuller is ok). But for some reason I always have to click until the glass is completely filled. If click the green button to continue, it still shows the remaining glasses instead of skipping to the next trial. Or am I missing something?

Some other point: Would it be possible to make something like a dummy trial where the response (i.e the area that was clicked on before the green button) is stored? In this solution I need to look in the log file to see the last response before the green button response.

Can you please clarify what keyboard entry is supposed to trigger the green button? I ask because I only used your original .csv file to make the one trial file I sent you, so it's the response associated with pressing the 5 that should end the trial in the file I sent you.

Could you please also clarify what you mean by "dummy trial?" DirectRT is set up to record its keypresses in the log file, as you already know. I just want to make sure I know what you are trying to do.

I want to use the mouse to trigger the green button. Participants should continue clicking on the glass until the glass is filled as much as they want to (as in your file) and then click on the green button to end the trial and continue with the next one. So no keyboard entry should be used at all.

I think if the above problem is solved, a "dummy trial" is not needed anymore. If if want, for example, the glass to be filled three quarters, I click on the glass until it is filled three quarters and then have to click twice on the green button. With the first click the glass gets filled completely and with the second click I continue to the next trial. In the log file I then see a "5" in the "Resp" colums for the first three stimuli and a "4" for the last one. So I need to look which row is the last one that has a "5" in the "Resp" column to know which was the actual response. So I wanted to have a dummy trial to store this response. But if the first click on the green button immediately ends the trial, the last row of this trial should be the actual response, shouldn't it?
